Animal Crossing: New Horizons
What are Bells and Nook Miles?
In Animal Crossing New Horizons, much like many other Animal Crossing games, there is the currency of the game called Bells. Bells somewhat are equivalent to the real life currency Yen, which is the Japanese currency. The symbol for bells are either a round gold coin or a tan pouch with a star in the middle of it. The player uses bells in the game to purchase items and pay for house upgrades. Bells are originally what the player used in the past to pay for everything in the previous Animal Crossing games. However now another form of currency has been added to this latest edition in the Animal Crossing series.

The newest form of currency in New Horizons is called Nook Miles. Nook Miles is given to the player as an app for the phone given by Tom Nook. This currency gives the players a reward for getting what the game considers achievements. Nook Miles are received when a player completes a certain type of task. The task can be anything from fishing, to crafting tools, to talking to the player's neighbors, even getting bitten by a spider gets the player Nook Miles. Here is a process video of what Nook Miles are from a clip from a demonstration of the early stages of the video game.
Nook Miles receive an upgrade, after the player pays off the bill for their tent on the island. The player does this by earning 5,000 Nook Miles. Then to receive what the game calls Nook Miles+, the player must ask Tom Nook for a house upgrade in place of their tent. After the player asks Tom Nook for the house, the player is automatically given the Nook Miles+ feature. The difference between the regular Nook Miles and the plus feature, is the the plus miles refresh every time the player completes a Nook Mile+. Nook Miles+ appears at the top of the regular Nook Miles in application in the players phone.
This video gives a good summary of Nook Miles+ and gives a good overall guide to how a player can earn as many Nook Miles as they want.
Nook Miles have a variety of uses in New Horizons. The player will mainly spend the Nook Miles on the ATM machine located in Tom Nook's tent. Like the picture shows below the player can spend Nook miles on new features for the game, items to use or wear, and something called Nook Miles Ticket. The Nook Miles Ticket is a very important feature of the game. As the player arrives to the deserted island by plane. The player can now visit other completely deserted islands, by using the miles ticket in the airport, where there is no civilization at all. Now there may be an animal villager who is visiting the new deserted island, and the player can invite that villager to live on their island. The other purpose of these randomly generated new deserted islands is for the player to gather resources like wood and iron nuggets. Also for the player can gather other fish and bugs.
So when it comes down it, both Nook Miles and bells have their own uses in New Horizons. Nook Miles allow the player easier access to new features of the game without having to spend as much bells as a player would in previous games.
